With the high Canadian dollar, more people are looking at purchasing vehicles south of the border. What are the savings and how do you import a car from the U.S.? - Riyaz Jamal, Waterloo, Ontario
In general, the more expensive the car, the bigger the savings will be. If you're in the market for an economy car, cross border shopping probably isn't' worth the effort, but if you're looking for a high-end car, you could easily save $15,000 or more. For instance, the Ford Focus is only $1,820 cheaper in the U.S. and the extra cost of importing it would likely eat up your savings. On the other hand, a BMW Z4 Roadster is $17,500 cheaper in the U.S., so even after spending a couple of grand to import it, the savings still make it well worth your while. If the car was made in North America (and even many BMWs are these days), then it will probably cost you about $1,000 in various fees if you go down to the U.S., buy the car yourself and navigate your own way through customs. Or, you can spend an extra $1,000 or so and get a broker to do it for you. Brian Osler, president of the North American Automobile Trade Association (NAATA), recommends getting help from a broker, as car manufacturers such as Toyota and GM are instructing their U.S. dealerships not to sell to Canadians, even though it would be perfectly legal for them to do so. He says that professional importers can help circumnavigate such obstacles, as well as handling the forms, fees and taxes at the border. You can find a list of brokers on the NAATA website at http://www.naata.org/.
